JISC Techdis Skillset consultation: please help

November 16th, 2011 by Rosemary Leadley

Why this is important to you? TechDis Logo
If you support disabled learners you will be aware of how many of them find it difficult to successfully access text. This could be for sensory reasons such as visual impairment, cognitive reasons such as dyslexia or second language issues such as BSL. A range of technologies already exist to support disabled learners in accessing text in electronic format but access is often frustrated by accessibility issues in digital copies of the text.

How you can make a difference in a few minutes?
Please help JISC TechDis by disseminating this to any people that you are aware of, who have responsibility for teaching learners with visual impairment, dyslexia or have difficulty accessing print. Or please respond yourselves.

JISC TechDis has worked with Skillset to help identify areas where accessibility can be explicitly stated within the national occupational standards. Lots of different groups within the publishing industry will be commenting on the standards.

We encourage you to help us increase the participation in the Skillset consultation on the National Occupational Standards for Publishing.

JISC TechDis has prepared a document that guides you through the consultation, explains how the consultation is set out and makes suggestions on what to contribute and where.

Read the full story on the JISC TechDis website and download the Guide to the Skillset Consultation at the bottom of that page.

NOTE: The consultation closes on 23 November.

Case Study: Redbridge College-Learning Observation Tracking System (LOTS)

October 24th, 2011 by Rosemary Leadley

Reliance on diverse, paper-based recording systems to capture information related to teaching observations was perceived at Redbridge College as costly both in staff time and lost opportunities to drive college-wide improvement. The in-house development and implementation of the Learning Observation Tracking System (LOTS) took place over a year and led to improved consistency and compliance with the observation process and more effective management information and monitoring. As OfSTED observed, the College lesson observation system is well organised and managed, and outcomes are related clearly to a wide range of relevant staff development opportunities.

JISC Innovating e-Learning 2011 Keynote: Technology: the new force in our education system?

October 24th, 2011 by Rosemary Leadley

JISC News Release

Innovating e-Learning 2011 Keynote: Technology: the new force in our education system?

David Puttnam, Lord Puttnam of Queensgate, will consider the potential impact of a major, positive disruption to the way the world approaches learning and teaching at the JISC online e-learning conference on 22-25 November 2011. Lord Puttnam, who is a renowned speaker and chairman of FutureLab, following a highly acclaimed career in the film industry, will share with participants his view on how pedagogy is going digital, in what is likely to be a controversial and challenging keynote.

Lord Puttnam is joined at the sixth annual JISC e-learning online conference by other expert speakers including:

  • Bill Rammell,  deputy vice-chancellor at the Plymouth University
  • Mike Sharples, professor of educational technology at the Institute of Educational Technology, The Open University
  • Ewan McIntosh  chief executive at educational consultancy NoTosh and expert speaker on finding creative ways of using emerging technologies in education

Participants at the conference will be able to pose questions to the speakers and join in discussions from the comfort of their own workplace, using the Blackboard Collaborate platform followed by asynchronous discussions.

Sarah Knight, e-learning programme manager at JISC and event organiser said, “Taking part in an online conference is just as important as if you were attending in person. There will be ample opportunity to join in stimulating discussions and to share practice.

“This year the themes of ‘learning landscapes’ and ‘navigating pathways’ in the digital age, will be discussed focusing on the opportunities created by technology-enhanced assessment and feedback, digital literacy, open educational resources, lifelong learning and students as agents of change,” adds Sarah.

In order to help participants make full use of the networking and discussion opportunities, participants will be able to prepare for the event ahead of time in a pre-conference activity week.

http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/elearningpedagogy/elpconference11/Activity%20Week.aspx

Sarah concludes, “This year’s conference is one of the best yet, offering a big conference experience in the most cost-effective way. At £50 per delegate, it represents significant value for money for organisations and education departments feeling the constraints of a tight budget.”
