Case Study: Redbridge College-Learning Observation Tracking System (LOTS)

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Reliance on diverse, paper-based recording systems to capture information related to teaching observations was perceived at Redbridge College as costly both in staff time and lost opportunities to drive college-wide improvement. The in-house development and implementation of the Learning Observation Tracking System (LOTS) took place over a year and led to improved consistency and compliance with the observation process and more effective management information and monitoring. As OfSTED observed, the College lesson observation system is well organised and managed, and outcomes are related clearly to a wide range of relevant staff development opportunities.

Case Study: BSix Brooke House SFC-Using Facebook Groups to support learners

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

BSix LogoThe use of Facebook and other popular online social networking tools in education raises a number of issues for teachers and institutions. At BSix, rather than avoiding these challenges and refusing the students’ request, Tutor Koren Leaves and Director of Student and Staff Learning Hilary Moore have worked with students to make appropriate and managed use of Facebook to support their learning. They are clear about the benefits of this approach, which are as much about fostering team working and the group identity of the students as providing an additional channel of communication.

Case Study: Kingston College Blended learning across the curriculum-from models to delivery

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Kingston College Logo

The Curriculum Cube is Kingston College’s framework for technology integration in curriculum planning and delivery. It evolved from the Kube Project that focused on integrating technology into higher education business programmes through a blend of online and face-to-face delivery.

Kingston is now developing practical resources to allow teaching teams to translate models of curriculum design into concrete experiences for learners. The Kode Project (Kingston Options for Designing e-Learning), funded by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), builds on the Kube models to identify a teachers’ toolkit for the design of effective blended learning.

LSIS master logoNews Release

Today, the JISC RSCs are proud to announce publication of the 300th case study on the Excellence Gateway.

Our 300th case study demonstrates eco-friendly learning in FE

The case studies aim to stimulate and support innovation and improvement in learning and skills and are produced in partnership with the Excellence Gateway, the Learning and Skills Improvement Service’s online service.

The 300th case study looks at Linkage College’s eco-friendly, touchscreen PCs, which have improved access to communication for learners while delivering cost benefits. It joins a bank of case studies which show how learning providers across England are making the most of new technologies to help curriculum design, management and delivery, as well as improve organisational quality, planning and performance. The case studies of good e-practice represent an invaluable pool of knowledge from within the FE and skills sector.

Available exclusively on the Excellence Gateway, the case studies explore good e-practice by FE, Sixth Form and specialist colleges, adult and community learning providers and work-based learning providers.

Over the past year alone, the good e-practice case studies section received 130,204 views, averaging approximately 10,000 views per month.

Visitors can browse the case studies to find those relevant to their area of interest or to the type of technology they wish to explore. Key topics covered to date include:

• virtual learning environments;

• Web 2.0 technologies;

• social networking;

• continuing professional development;

• successful models of staff development;

• collaboration between learning providers and employers; and

• accessibility and inclusion for learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.

One of the most popular case studies of 2010 features Croydon Adult Learning and Training, which made use of its Moodle virtual learning platform to work collaboratively with a range of organisations to provide new learning opportunities and to meet the needs of specific groups of learners.

Another case study features Abingdon and Witney College which used a social network to deliver part of its Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTTLS) teacher training qualification. Not only did this provide ITT students with first-hand experience of remote online collaboration, it also allowed them to evaluate the relevance and value of such teaching methods for eventual use with their own students.

Wendy Beckett is an IT Trainer and Developer at North Warwickshire & Hinckley College. Her role is to look at how technology can be incorporated into teaching and learning effectively. She says:

“I find the Excellence Gateway a valuable source of inspiration for teaching and learning. In particular, I found the information on the ‘busbi’ cameras very useful and was able to incorporate some of the innovative ideas when presenting to trainee teachers and existing practitioners. I have had one case study published on the Excellence Gateway and fully intend to complete another one to help others by sharing my exciting experiences.”

Angela Harvey, JISC RSC Services Co-ordinator, says:

“Reading, hearing or seeing how a colleague in another learning provider has used technology to good effect in their work, or how a learning provider has used technology on a wider scale to improve its effectiveness, can be enlightening.

“One of the roles of the RSCs is to help share the good practice around the country and these case studies are an excellent way to do that.”

Rob Wye, LSIS chief executive, adds:

“The good e-practice case studies section consistently appears in the top 10 most accessed content on the Excellence Gateway and we receive feedback from users on how useful they are for inspiring improvements in their day-to-day work. What is important is that most of the case studies offer supporting files and advice from the featured providers themselves, which will help anyone wishing to replicate the good practice.”

Case study: Lewisham College-eME-a portal for empowered learning

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Lewis_logoLewishamCollege’s learner portal, eME, delivers personalised information to learners rather than requiring users to search for it within a mass of college systems. The portal epitomises a philosophy of education in which learners are empowered and have control over their own learning coupled with aggregated systems to support this process. eME allows users to assume responsibility for their own learning by devolving control through a variety of integrated tools. It also enables learners to share their ideas and work with their peers as part of the learning journey.

Case study: Bexley College extending and enlivening e-learning

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

‘Sparks’, Bexley College’s Moodle-based virtual learning environment (VLE), was not a popular platform by September 2008 and was underused by both lecturers and learners. John Jackson, e-Learning and VLE Professional Tutor, and Dave Byrne, ILT Training and Development Co-ordinator, set out to discover what could be done to turn this situation around and start to embed e-learning across the College.

Over 60 staff and 1,750 learners, representing a wide range of programmes from basic education, access to higher education, Business, ICT, Beauty, ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages), Art and Design and Construction, were involved in the drive to extend and enliven e-learning at Bexley College.

Case Study: Bromley Adult Education College trials desktop virtualisation

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

BAEC LogoBromley Adult Education College (BAEC) selected NComputing desktop virtualisation as a cheaper and greener IT solution for some of its classrooms. A pilot system was implemented within a few months and the evaluation has identified quantifiable benefits.

NComputing is a desktop virtualisation that enables multiple users to share the processing power of a single computer. This has several advantages over the traditional PC model, including lower overall costs, better energy efficiency, and simplified administration.

This case study highlights BAEC’s journey starting with its attendance at a regional Green IT event hosted by JISC RSC London in spring 2009 to its rapid implementation of a pilot NComputing system in September 2009 and its subsequent positive evaluation using the SusteIT  ICT footprint tool.

The School of Arts at Barnet College covers a range of subjects including Multimedia Design, Graphics, Music, Photography, Fashion, Creative and Performing Arts. The School has been leading the way in exploring the use of blogs for students working at Entry Level through to those on Foundation Degree courses. Recognising the wide range of prior experience with online tools amongst teachers and learners, Barnet’s approach is exploratory and experimental with experience shared across the College as new staff members are encouraged to introduce blogs as part of their own practice.

This RSC London case study for the Excellence Gateway describes how teachers at Barnet College are using blogs in a variety of ways with their learners, and how their learners are responding to the experience in different ways.
